Yamashita Kenjiro (山下健二郎) is a Japanese performer, actor and radio personality. He is a member of the group Sandaime J SOUL BROTHERS from EXILE TRIBE.

He joined the group after been selected as a member of GEKIDAN EXILE only five months earlier.

Early Life

Yamashita Kenjiro was born on May 24, 1985 in Nagaokakyo, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. He is a Kyoto Prefectural Koyo High School graduate.

Yamashita started dancing when he was in high school by performing at school festivals. "At that time, it wasn't possible to learn dancing anywhere like it is now, and if you could dance a little, you would be popular (laughs). And I wanted to be popular. [...] I've always liked to move my body, and dancing was a fun way to see how I was getting better day by day. I was also interested in music and fashion, and through dancing, I came to love the world I came into contact with, and dancing itself gradually became a lifestyle."

In 2007, Yamashita appeared as a backup dancer at EXILE LIVE TOUR 2007 EXILE EVOLUTION. After that, he started to attend EXPG in Osaka as soon as the school opened in the city.

In 2009, he moved to Tokyo after being finalist of the 1st GEKIDAN EXILE audition. During that time, he worked part-time at McDonald's as a swing manager.

Career

In April, 2010, he became a member of GEKIDAN EXILE. On September 18 of the same year, during a rehearsal of EXILE LIVE TOUR 2010 FANTASY in Kobe, he was announced as a member of Sandaime J Soul Brothers, having a concurrent position on GEKIDAN EXILE.

On July 19, 2011, Yamashita withdrew from GEKIDAN EXILE.

2018

On October 27, the event Sandaime J Soul Brothers Yamashita Kenjiro no All Night Nippon presents Yama Fes ~Yamashita Base in Yokohama Arena~ organized by himself was held as part of his radio program Sandaime J Soul Brothers Yamashita Kenjiro no All Night Nippon. Like the program, the festival featured an array of artists and comedians with ties to Yamashita.

2020

On January 18, the event Sandaime J SOUL BROTHERS Yamashita Kenjiro no ZERO BASE presents Yama Fes ~Yamashita Base in Yokohama Arena 2020~ was held as part of his radio program Sandaime J SOUL BROTHERS Yamashita Kenjiro no ZERO BASE.

Personal Life

Family

On July 26, 2021, Yamashita announced his marriage to model and actress Asahina Aya. The couple had been dating for about two years after meeting through a mutual acquaintance. Shortly before, in an interview released on July 17, Yamashita had expressed his desire to get married: "I would like to (get married). I can't break this lifestyle of mine anymore, so it would be impossible unless someone understands me (laughs). But I've been living alone for a long time, so I can cook, clean, do laundry, and do all the housework perfectly. [...] I would like someone I can have fun with over trivial things and lead a happy life with."

On December 14, 2023, Nikkan Sports reported that Asahina would be over three months pregnant and scheduled to give birth in early summer 2024. She confirmed the news on the same day.

On March 25, 2024, the couple announced the birth of their first child.

Hobbies

In his private life, Yamashita has actively been invovled hobbies related to nature and in DIY work. According to himself, he was influenced by coming from a family of potters and had loved making things since he was a little child. Subsequently, he has released several books on the topic of DIY work, such as a WORKERS TOOL BOOK and a CAMPING TOOL BOOK. He shows some insights in his hobbies on his YouTube channel YAMASHITA BASE.

Health

On July 26, 2022, it was announced that Yamashita would cancel his schedules on the same day due to illness. On July 27, it was reported that he had been diagnosed with COVID-19 and would carefully follow the instructions of the public health center and experts for a healthy recovery.
