Suzuki Nobuyuki (鈴木伸之) is a Japanese actor and singer. He is a former member of the acting group GEKIDAN EXILE.

Suzuki joined GEKIDAN EXILE on January 25, 2011 after successfully passing the Dai 3kai GEKIDAN EXILE Audition. Prior to that, he had participated in the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 2 ~Yume wo Motta Wakamono Tachi e~ but failed.

He made his official debut as a singer on October 22, 2022 with the digital single "Futarinori", the ending theme of the TV drama Jitenshaya-san no Takahashi-kun in which he starred as the titular character.

Suzuki graduated from GEKIDAN EXILE on December 31, 2023 to focus on his solo activities.[1]

Early Life[]

Nobuyuki Suzuki was born on October 14, 1992, in the Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, as the youngest of three brothers.[2] He played baseball from the first grade of elementary school to the second grade of junior high school, but had to give up his path of becoming a professional player after breaking his elbow.[3][4]

Career[]

2010[]

In early 2010, Suzuki participated in the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 2 ~Yume wo Motta Wakamono Tachi e~ with the vague dream of becoming a singer, but was eliminated during the second screening.[5][6] Nevertheless, he had caught the interest of LDH during the audition: "At that time, I was working part-time at a yakiniku restaurant in my hometown. At the end of the job, I noticed a voicemail [...]. It was from LDH, and they asked me if I was interested in attending EXPG. It was an invitation. I was frustrated that I didn't pass the audition, and I thought it was a chance to get closer to my dream of singing, so I immediately decided to attend.",[6][7] "[...] HIRO asked me if I wanted to be an actor, and that's when I started."[2] As a result, he started attending EXPG Tokyo as a scholarship student, and took acting, singing and dancing lessons.[2][6] While being an EXPG student, he was invited to take part in the GEKIDAN EXILE audition that would be held in the same year.

In October 2010, he passed the 3rd GEKIDAN EXILE Audition and started his career as an actor.[2][8][9] He had no previous acting experience when taking the audition, and later revealed that he did not have any interest in it either at that time. As a result, he faced many troubles at his first acting job (a stage play), but seeing the final result made him change his mind and appreciate the art of entertainment. "From there, I began to think, "I want to be able to create good works" and "I want to be someone who can have as much of a positive impact as possible on the works I participate in", and this has continued until now."[7]

2013[]

In 2013, he played his first leading role in the movie ARAGURE.

2016[]

On August 6, it was announced that Nobuyuki would play the role of "Kotaro Amon" in the live-action adaptation of the popular manga Tokyo Ghoul, which was released on July 29, 2017.[10][11]

2018[]

On February 2, he released his first photo-book titled FACE.[12]

2019[]

On January 22, Nobuyuki and fellow GEKIDAN EXILE member Yagi Masayasu broke the Guinness World Record for "Most marshmallows caught with chopsticks in one minute (team of two)" in their first attempt with 43 marshmallows in one minute.[13][14][15]

On February 14, Nobuyuki attended the PRINCE OF LEGEND PREMIUM LIVE SHOW, a fan-meeting with the whole Prince of Legend cast, at Yokohama Arena.[16] During the event he performed a cover of A-ha's "Take On Me" together with Kawamura Kazuma, publicly showcasing his vocal abilities for the first time since his participation in the VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 2 in 2010.

Later on June 30, Nobuyuki and Masayasu set yet another Guinness World Record, this time for "Most marshmallows caught by mouth in one minute" with 53 marshmallows in total.[17][18]

When asked about a challenge he had recently faced during the announcement interview of the stage play Yuusha no Tame ni Kane wa Naru, on August 26, Nobuyuki revealed he had been studying English for the past 7 months, 4 hours a day, and that he would continue to do so for his own growth.[19] On September 20, Nobuyuki participated as a guest in the Batman 80th Anniversary Shibuya Project Presentation held in Tokyo.[20] There, he expressed his desire to advance to Hollywood at the age of 30 after having studied English intensely for 4 years and becoming fluent in the language.[21][2]

On October 16, he released a room-wear collection in collaboration with Japanese fashion brand PEACH JOHN. The clothes included are unisex and intended to be shared with your loved one.

2020[]

On February 19, Nobuyuki released his second photobook titled OVERSEAS. The shooting locations for this photo-book were Las Vegas and Los Angeles, symbolizing the actor's approach to his advancement to Hollywood which is his future dream.[22]

2021[]

On August 12, it was revealed during a press conference for JAM -the project- that Suzuki would debut as a singer by performing the solo song "Kimi no Subete ni Boku wa Naru" as part of the project, for which he also learned playing guitar.[23][24]

2022[]

In early 2022 he played the lead role in the NTV drama Kei x Yaku, a live-action adaptation of the manga of the same name by Kaoruhara Yoshie.[25]

In autumn of the same year, he also starred in the TV Tokyo drama Jitenshaya-san no Takahashi-kun, a live-action adaptation of the manga of the same name by Matsumushi Arare, as the titular character "Takahashi Ryohei".[26][27][28] On this occasion, he also made his official debut as a singer with the ending theme song of the drama titled "Futarinori", written by Tani Yuuki and released on October 22.[29][30][31][32][33] A day prior to the release, Suzuki performed the song on the music YouTube channel THE FIRST TAKE as his first live performance as a singer.[34][35][36][37][38] After his debut, he revealed that the decision to make his debut as an artist was a sudden one and that he would like to release an album, write songs himself and eventually do an arena tour when he had enough original songs in the future.[39][40]

2023[]

On February 8, he released his second digital single titled "Ambivalence", which served as an insert song of the TV drama Ninja ni Kekkon wa Muzukashii in which he also plays one of the lead roles.[41][42][43]

On September 29, it was announced that Suzuki would graduate from GEKIDAN EXILE on December 31, 2023 to focus on his solo activities while remaining under LDH JAPAN.[44][45]

Announcement from Suzuki Nobuyuki[1]
Thank you for your continued warm support.

First of all, I think I may have surprised you with this sudden announcement, but I would like to express my thoughts again in my own words.

For about 13 years since I auditioned at the age of 17, I have been a member of "Gekidan EXILE", and with the help of my colleagues and staff of the troupe, and with the support of many people, I have been able to continue my activities without any inconvenience to this day.
Looking back now, I am filled with a feeling of gratitude that cannot be expressed in words.
Once again, thank you all very much.

As 13 years have passed, when I look at my life from a bird's eye view, I feel that time passes more quickly, and I have been asking myself more and more whether I can continue like this.

I have come to this decision because I want to share with you all the joyful and happy times, the embarrassing and shameful times, and the many other things that have happened in my life, and start living a life that I will not regret when I look back on it in the future.

From now on, I will continue to work as an actor so that many people will support the life of Suzuki Nobuyuki.

I would be happy if you could continue to watch over me warmly.
At the same time, I hope that Gekidan EXILE will continue to make great strides.

Trivia[]

  • Generally associated with roles of delinquents, antagonists, rivals / love rivals and second leads.[83] He himself has mentioned that he would sometimes feel depressed that he is typecasted as delinquents due to his looks and physique.[84][85] "If you're this big, you're inevitably going to be cast as the strongest and most evil person."[2]
    • According to a producer who has worked with Nobuyuki, he makes "the hero shine because he has an attractive and powerful enemy". In response, Nobuyuki explained: "[...] If I don't make my character look like a strong, evil, and absolutely unbeatable opponent, the coolness and deliciousness of the main character will be reduced by half. But in my case, my physique is big and strong, so just by doing it in a normal way, it is a contrast to the hero's ineffectual-looking character. Maybe that is why I am suited to play the role of a rival."[7] Furthermore, he explained that he is fine with playing the villain or "bad guy" if that is what producers and the audience want: "If the bad guy doesn't look bad, the film is not interesting. I think it is an important role because if the character looks really bad, the audience will concentrate on the role. It is very rewarding."[85]
  • Initially didn't plan to become an actor. He had the vague idea of becoming a singer, but was scouted as an actor after failing the VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 2.[2][6][7]
  • Describes himself as a "shy person" and "free spirit" that doesn't like to be tied down too much.[2] He has also mentioned that his personality has affected his work as an actor since he has difficulty talking to people on set and getting to know them. "[...] I think too much about whether I'll get in the way or what people will think of me talking like this... If I just keep quiet, I won't make waves, so I'll just do what I have to do and go home."[2]
    • According to himself, he was different as child and able to talk to people easily.[2]
  • Has revealed that he tends to overthink and be negative: "I sometimes feel depressed after the broadcast because I put a lot of thought into it (*acting) and wonder if there is something I could have done differently. The more exposure I get, the more I wonder if I'm doing okay. I sometimes wonder if I could have done it differently after the broadcast. Of course, I do what I can on the spot, and I am completely exhausted every time, but I would like to work even harder on my acting and make the most of the opportunities I get."[9]
  • According to himself, he can't dance at all despite taking dancing lessons at EXPG. "[...] LDH artists are people who have been dancing for a long time since they were little, so to speak, they are top class. I gave up early on because I thought I couldn't catch up from now."[2]
  • Views his height and physique as a complex: "[...] I don't like being big. It stands out even in my private life. For example, when I was asked to do a romantic movie with an actress, we had to get her on a wooden board called a pancake. I'm too tall, plus I have to take off my shoes to act."[2]
  • Would like to participate in international movies: "I'm studying English now. I'd like to show it in overseas productions. I'd like to do action productions."[2]
    • In an interview in May 2022, he revealed that he had already prepared to work in Hollywood productions until the COVID-19 pandemic happened, which also led to him re-evaluate his acting career as a realistic choice for the future: "[...] I went to Los Angeles many times to appear in Hollywood productions, and I kept taking lessons from morning to night, going from one pronunciation teacher, acting teacher, and conversation teacher to another, but the Corona disaster put a stop to that. I even became concerned about whether I would be able to do my current job as an extension of my 20s in the future. Right now, the best thing I can do is to honestly face the work in front of me, but I also wonder if the time has come for me to seriously consider a career in my 30s."[9]
    • In an interview in November 2022, he mentioned that he still dreamed of entering the international film industry and that he would like to try his hand at Asian films and Japanese roles in Hollywood.[40]
  • Has a driver's license for large motorcycles, but has never ridden one in private.[85]
  • Likes singing,[2][86] especially classic love ballads as he used to sing at karaoke.[39][40]
    • Since he started singing professionally, he has become more conscious of his tone of voice when acting.[39]
  • Listens to a wide range of music from various artists. In particular, he likes Ed Sheeran, Mr. Children, ONE OK ROCK, Aimer, Yuuri, and many others.[39][40]
  • An indoor person.[2]
  • Has a very close friendship with fellow GEKIDAN EXILE member Machida Keita.[2][87]
  • Is close friends with actor Nakagawa Taishi. They have co-starred in several works together. In 2021, Nakagawa revealed: "I've known him since middle school. We used to play brothers before, so we are good friends. I love him very much."[88][89][90]
  • Goes to the gym on a regular basis.[2] However, in an interview in April 2022, he revealed that he had stopped working out to feel more comfortable in his own body: "I wanted to enjoy my natural state rather than push myself excessively. From now on, I would like to show my charm that is not just the image of LDH."[91]
  • Looking back at his childhood, he described himself as a child that was energetic, cheerful, too noisy in class and didn't like studying.[2]
  • In an interview in December 2019, he mentioned that around 2013, there was a time when he was late to work once every two days since had no motivation to get up. After HIRO heard about the issue, he invited Nobuyuki to a restaurant. However, HIRO was not angry as Nobuyuki expected, but very kind and gave him advice for the future. Moved by this kindness, Nobuyuki promised to not be late again. Nevertheless, he was late the very next day, which led him to voluntarily clean along the Meguro River every morning from that day on out of embarrassement.[92]
  • Has a small dog named "Sun".
  • According to SWAY, Suzuki teases people regardless of their age and, as a joke, he can talk to each of the members of GEKIDAN EXILE evenly.[93]
  • Aspires to do very entertaining films like Umizaru: "I want to be the main character in a drama that turns into a movie and makes the whole country go crazy for it."[94][2] "[...] I genuinely want to play a role that helps people. This is regardless of the role of the main character's rival."[85]
  • His hobbies are golf, playing video games, watching variety shows and YouTube videos, hanging out with friends, and visiting saunas.[2][95][87]
  • Is very interested in skincare.[91]
  • In an interview for his role in the drama Koidesu! ~Yankee-kun to Shiro Tsue Girl~, he mentioned: "The way he (Shishio) approaches Morio, a man, is interesting to play as a character. However, such things are not special these days. [...]. I am able to act without being conscious of anything in particular in terms of loving a man as a person in the same way that I love a woman."[7]
  • When asked if there was anything he would like about himself in an interview in October 2018, he answered "Not much."[2]
  • On April 3, 2019, Fukuoka Softbank Hawks announced that Nobuyuki would throw the first pitch at the opening ceremony of Takagirl Day in TOKYO (vs. Orix Buffaloes) at Tokyo Dome on the 22nd of the same month. The speed of his pitch reached 122 km/h.[3]
  • Aspires to be more independent in his career by the time he is 35.[2]
  • When asked what the "EXILE Soul" is to him, he responded: "That's right, I don't have the EXILE soul. I dared not to care about EXILE soul. In a good sense, I don't want to show the color of LDH or EXILE soul, but I would like to be a person who can be seen by everyone as an actor in an ordinary way." "There are not many people in the company who only do acting, so I hope I can contribute to the company from a different point of view from EXILE's character."[85]
  • According to his co-stars, he is about 190 cm when he wears shoes.[96]
  • The original author of Jitenshaya-san no Takahashi-kun imagined Suzuki playing the role of the main character for a live-action adaptation, which he later indeed did.[97]
  • Suzuki was staying in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture (the distaster area) when the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake occurred. He was able to evacuate safely.[98]
