Sato Taiki (佐藤大樹) is a Japanese actor and performer. He is a member of EXILE and one of the leaders of FANTASTICS from EXILE TRIBE.

Prior to his debut, he was part of the EXPG trainee team EXILE GENERATIONS and a support member of GENERATIONS.

Early Life[]

Sato Taiki was born on January 25, 1995, in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. He has a younger brother.[1][2]

Sato had loved variety shows, dramas and movies since he was a child, and used to imitate comedians' skits and scenes from dramas. From a young age, he wanted to be a TV personality and was sure he would enter the entertainment industry in the future.[3]

His mother, who is a big fan of EXILE, invited him to attend the EXILE LIVE TOUR 2009 "THE MONSTER" when he was in junior high school, and he was amazed by how well the members performed. Influenced by the group's concert, he started to aspire to become a dancer and member of EXILE. Around the time of his high school entrance exams, his parents promised him that if he passed these exams with a certain average grade, he could take up dancing. Motivated by this promise, Sato went to cram school daily and studied hard, suceeded in passing the exams with the required average grade and ultimately started to take dance classes at EXPG Tokyo and also became a member of his high school's dance club.[4][3][5][6] Simultaneously, he started working part-time jobs (up to 4 at the same time) as he was paying for his own lessons.[5]

Looking back on his busy high school days, he later said, "I used to dance and work part-time every day when I was a student, and I also liked to study. I worked hard to balance those three things."[7][8], "After school, I would go home to drop off my belongings and then commute 1.5 hours to EXPG Tokyo for lessons, usually returning home around 2 am. Since it was a public high school, I had to go to school normally, and if I did poorly, I would lose credits, so I had to ride my bicycle to school every day and make up lessons at 6:00 in the morning."[5] However, this dedication also had its downsides: "Instead, I couldn't do any of the adolescent-like things you can do as a student. Things like after-school uniform dates and walking around drinking tapioca. I think it was because I cut out all those things that I was able to accomplish what I did."[6] "[...] when I weighed the pros and cons, I knew that what I was doing now would definitely help me in the future, so I didn't hesitate, and even now I don't regret it at all."[9] On the other hand, as he took acting lessons at EXPG, he became interested in acting as well: "Even after I started dancing, I always wanted to act, so I went to various auditions on my own."[7][10]

Before focusing on dance, he was a member of the soccer club for 6 years from 3rd grade of elementary school to 3rd grade of junior high school.[7][5]

Career[]

2011[]

In 2011, Sato entered the entertainment world as part of the trainee group EXILE GENERATIONS and as a support member of GENERATIONS (until 2013). At that time, he had only been dancing for a year and a half, and he describes his experience being a support member as sobering: "[...] other than me, there were only super kids who had been dancing since they were children, and I couldn't keep up with them at all. I realized firsthand that my abilities were not up to par with the environment I was given. I hated it so much that I even wondered why I had been accepted. At that time, I really wanted to quit." However, seeing fellow support member Nakatsuka Yuta being chosen to become an official member of GENERATIONS gave him the motivation to continue and work harder.[9] In the same year, he appeared on the music video of FUNKY MONKEY BABYS' song "Love Letter".[7]

2012[]

In 2012, Sato made acting debut in the drama Sugarless.

2014[]

In early 2014, he participated in the EXILE PERFORMER BATTLE AUDITION. For Sato, who was thinking about his life plan, this audition was almost his last chance: "If I couldn't find a job in the dance world by the time I was 20, I had other dreams, like becoming a high school teacher."[7][6][10] On April 27, at only 19 years old, he was announced as one of the winners of the audition and joined EXILE as a new performer and the youngest member.[11]

2016[]

On December 29, it was revealed that he had become a member and leader (alongside Sekai) of the unit FANTASTICS.[12]

2018[]

On December 5, he re-debuted as a member of FANTASTICS from EXILE TRIBE.

2020[]

On January 25, on his 25th birthday, he released his first photobook STEP BY STEP.

2022[]

In 2022, he participated in the "Honto ha Utaitai Performer Audition" (本当は歌いたいパフォーマー・オーディション; Audition for performers who really want to sing) of Dreamer Z for EXILE TRIBE performers.

2023[]

In summer 2023, he played his first starring role in a terrestrial TV drama in the series around 1/4, a live-action adaptation of the WEBTOON of the same title.[13][14][15][16]

2024[]

On April 2, his first regular radio program titled "FANTASTICS Sato Taiki no Bocchi Mic" started airing on NACK5.[17][18]

Personal Life[]

Health

On December 3, 2020, it was announced that Sato was diagnosed with COVID-19. On November 30, one member of the staff who worked with Sato had a fever. Even though Sato did not have fever or any other symptoms, he did a PCR test as a safety measure and was diagnosed positive with COVID-19 on December 1. He's carefully following the instructions of the public health center and experts for a healthy recovery. In addition, the members of EXILE also made the PCR test for safety even though they were not classified as "close contacts" with Sato, and all members were diagnosed negative for the virus.[19] On December 16, he announced through his EXILE/EXILE TRIBE mobile blog that he had recovered from the virus and resumed activities.[20]

  • Enjoys performing on stage shirtless. For this reason, he has been trying to keep his body fit enough to take it off for live performances.[51]

  • His favorite character in his childhood was Aladdin's "Genie".[48]
  • If he had become a high school teacher, his subject would have been math.[6][10]
