Katayose Ryota (片寄涼太) is a Japanese singer, performer and actor. He is a member of the group GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE.

In 2010, he participated in the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 2 ~Yume wo Motta Wakamono Tachi e~ to become a member of Sandaime J Soul Brothers, but ended up as a finalist.

He made debut as a soloist on January 7, 2020 with the digital single "Possible", and made his major release as a soloist on August 21, 2024 with the single "tenkiame / Konya wa Boogie Back".

Early Life[]

Katayose Ryota was born on August 29, 1994, in Osaka, Japan. He is an only child.[1]

He began playing soccer at the age of 5 and practiced it until the third year of junior high school. During this time, he was selected to join the city's national team.[2]

He grew up learning to play the piano from his grandfather and father, who are both music teachers. However, he never had a particular dream of becoming a singer or entertainer back then. According to Katayose himself, "I was more of an accompanist at choir contests, and I liked to assist.", rather than being in the spotlight. It was his mother who inspired him to make his debut in the entertainment world. One day, she invited him to go to a live performance of EXILE after Katayose had bought an album by EXILE as a junior high school student. As he watched the live show of the group at Kyocera Dome Osaka, he was so fascinated that he considered becoming an entertainer for the first time. Since he liked to sing and was praised for being good when going to karaoke, he decided to try singing when he entered high school.[3]

Nevertheless, at that point he still didn't think he could or wanted to be an entertainer, just like he was playing soccer even though he knew he would never become a professional player. Katayose desribed this mindset as a "realistic or cold side" of himself.[4]

Career[]

2010[]

In February 2010, Katayose participated in the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 2 ~Yume wo Motta Wakamono Tachi e~. However, he didn't expect to have a chance of winning or make any lasting impression. During the competition, Katayose was inspired by the other contestants who were passionate about their goals, but he still didn't have a strong desire to become a singer yet. Ultimately, he became a finalist, but was not selected. At a dinner party after the audition, EXILE ATSUSHI told him, "I think it's fine if you end up being a popular person in your hometown, but if you want to make it in this world, you need to keep improving yourself as a vocalist and push forward." Katayose was inspired by these words and realized that even if he gave up on his dream of entering the entertainment world, he could still go on to college and live a normal life, but if he backed off here, he would just be "a popular person in his hometown."[4]

Afterwards, he started attending EXPG Osaka as a special student with a scholarship.

2011[]

On July 19, he became a candidate member for GENERATIONS.

2012[]

On April 17, he was announced as an official member of GENERATIONS.

On November 21, he made his major debut as a member of the group with the single "BRAVE IT OUT". Katayose mentioned in an interview that he was excited, but more worried back then. He wondered if he would be able to reach a certain level of success. Despite all of this, his parents were the ones who pushed him forward and had supported him since he came to Tokyo to become a singer.[4]

2014[]

In July 2014, he made his acting debut in the drama GTO.

2017[]

The turning point in his career came after his first appearance in a movie, Ani ni Ai Saresugite Komattemasu, in which he played the role of the overprotective but loving older step-brother of the main character. At that point, Katayose realized that his charming and lovely image might be his "weapon" that sets him apart from other male LDH artists. With his prince character established, he quickly gained fans not only in Japan but also in Greater China.[3]

2018[]

On August 7, he released his first photobook titled Goodbye, White.

2019[]

In 2019, he debuted as a voice actor by taking on the role of the main character "Hinageshi Minato" in the animated film Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara.

In June, he attended the Shanghai International Film Festival where Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara had been nominated in the category "Animated Feature Film".[5]

At the end of the year, he became the first Japanese male to be selected by Variety as one of Asia's next generation of promising stars, receiving the "Asian Stars: Up Next" award at Macao Film Festival.[6][7]

2020[]

On January 7, Katayose debuted as a soloist with the release of his first digital single "Possible".

On July 24, he released his first style book titled C'est la vie.

2021[]

On February 15, it was revealed that Katayose had been chosen as the first Japanese ambassador of the luxury brand Givenchy.[8][9]

On October 29, he released his first book titled Round Trip Ofuku Shokan, a compilation of letters written by himself and lyricist Odake Masato which had previously been released as an online serialization.[10]

2022[]

In May, Katayose was appointed as the new image model for Exidéal, a line of facial equipment and cosmetics.[11]

On July 11, it was announced that his new song "Unmei", written by Tani Yuuki, would be used as an insert song for the TV drama Unmei Keisatsu in which he played the leading role too.[12] The song was released as a digital single on August 30.[13]

2023[]

In October, he starred in the TV drama Oshi ga Joshi ni Narimashite, for which he also sang the opening theme titled "Dance the life away".[14][15] The song was pre-released digitally on October 25 ahead of GENERATIONS' first mini-album beyond the GENERATIONS, on which the song is included.[16]

On October 29, he was appointed as a "Yao Tourism Creation Ambassador".[17]

2024[]

On August 21, he released his first CD single, as well his major debut as a soloist, titled "tenkiame / Konya wa Boogie Back".[18]

Personal Live[]

Family

Katayose grew up surrounded by music as both his grandfather and father were music teachers.[19] Through this influence he learned to play the piano since early childhood.

To the question "What kind of man would you like to be in the future?" in an interview in December 2019, he answered "I really admire the idea of marriage and having children, and I have a desire for that from now on. I think that's what brings out the depth and personality of a person, and since my parents gave birth to me, I would like to become a parent myself."[3]

Relationships

On January 1, 2023, Katayose and actress Tsuchiya Tao announced their marriage and that they would be expecting their first child. In the couple's announcement, they revealed that they had already been preparing for their marriage when they discovered Tsuchiya's pregnancy at the end of 2022.[20][21][22][23] The two had co-starred in the 2017 film Ani ni Aisaresugite Komattemasu, Katayose's first movie role.[24][25] According to tabloids, they grew close during the filming, which began in August 2016, and started their relationship in 2017.[26][27]

On August 29, 2023, Katayose's 29th birthday, the couple announced the birth of their first child.[28][29][30]

Health

On July 27, 2022, it was announced that Katayose would not attend the Release Commemoration Greeting Party for GENERATIONS's 27th single "Chikara no Kagiri" on the same day due to his poor health condition.[31][32] On July 29, it was reported that Katayose had been diagnosed with COVID-19, that he would cancel his schedules, carefully follow the instructions of the public health center and experts for a healthy recovery and that GENERATIONS would continue to perform as six members for the time being.[33][34][35][36]
