Hayashi Kazuki (林和希), better known by his stage name KAZUKI, is a Japanese singer, songwriter and producer managed by LDH JAPAN and signed to LDH Records. He is a member of the group DOBERMAN INFINITY and the R&B unit MIDNIGHT LONELY BOYZ.

Prior to joining the group, KAZUKI participated in the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 4 ~Yume wo Motta Wakamono Tachi e~ and finished as one of the finalists.

He debuted as a solo artist on May 31, 2023 with the album I, for which he started promoting under his birth name.

Early Life[]

Hayashi Kazuki was born on June 13, 1991 in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

In the second grade of elementary school, he started playing baseball and developed the dream of becoming a professional baseball player. In order to come closer to his goal, he entered a club team as a student. "In youth baseball, we had been a very weak team for a long time, but we won the second place in the prefectural tournament in our generation. I thought we could make it." However, when he entered his first year of junior high school, he sustained an injury which led to his dream of becoming a professional baseball player being cut short.[1][2] Looking back at his childhood, he described himself as a competitive person: "I was a show-off. Also, I didn't want to be beaten by anyone."[2]

Under the influence of his parents who loved Black music, Hayashi also developed an interest in music and singing. "Going to see the live performances of overseas artists at Blue Note was my Christmas present, so I had Black music around me since I was little."[1][2]

When he thought about his career path at the time of graduating from high school, he seriously wanted to sing, and moved to Tokyo at the age of 18 in order to pursue his dream.[1][3][2]

Career[]

2009-2012[]

After coming to Tokyo, Hayashi attended Senmon Gakkou ESP Musical Academy, a music school EXILE ATSUSHI also attended, and once won the grand prix in an audition at the school.[1][4][5] However, it did not lead to his debut, and in 2010, he participated in the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 2 ~Yume wo Motta Wakamono Tachi e~, but was unable to pass the second screening.[1][2]

After graduating from music school, he worked part-time as a construction worker during the day and went to singing lessons at night.[6] "[...] For a while I was allowed to leave work early two days a week and sing in the afternoon. I would go to karaoke, write songs with my friends, and go to voice training."[2] At that time, he attended EXPG Tokyo and trained with people such as Aoyama Riku. Nevertheless, he was unable to pass any of the auditions he kept taking.[1][5]

2013-2014[]

In autumn 2013, about a year and a half after graduating from music school, Hayashi quit his part-time job and participated in the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 4 ~Yume wo Motta Wakamono Tachi e~.[1][2][6] Looking back at this determining time period, he later recalled: "I kept telling people in my hometown that my debut was right around the corner, and I pushed myself so hard that I couldn't go home."[7] Ultimately, he was able to reach the final screening, but did not get selected as a winner. However, he was invited to become a new member of DOBERMAN INFINITY and given a chance to debut.[1]

On June 17, 2014, it was officially announced that Hayashi had joined DOBERMAN INFINITY under the stage name "KAZUKI".

2022[]

On October 28, it was revealed at the DOBERMAN INFINITY LIVE TOUR 2022 "LOST+FOUND" concert at Tokyo Garden Theater that KAZUKI would be making his solo debut in spring of 2023.[8][9][10][11][12]

2023[]

On May 31, he made his solo debut with his first album I. For his solo career, he started promoting under his birth name, Hayashi Kazuki.[13][14][15][16] The title track of the album, "Wow", was pre-released digitally on May 19.

On November 20, it was announced that he would hold his first solo tour Hayashi Kazuki LIVE TOUR 2024 "I" from February 3 to March 20, 2024 and that he would release his first single "Tokyo" on February 21, 2024.[17][18][19]

Personal Life[]

Health

On August 11, 2021, it was announced that KAZUKI had been diagnosed with COVID-19. As a result, the Osaka performance of DOBERMAN INFINITY OFFICIAL FAN CLUB EVENT "D6 PARTY" ~HERE We Are~" scheduled for August 14 and other events of the group were cancelled or postponed.[20][21]

Trivia[]

  • Has several tattoos on his chest and arms.
  • Has a nose piercing.
  • Aspires to become an acknowledged songwriter.[2]
  • Likes to do voice training, muscle training, and listening to various kinds of music.[2]
  • According to his members, he is "very old in his way of thinking" and "a cute little brother who does not feel much age difference".[1]
  • Described as competitive, hardworking and "a bit of a perfectionist", yet very self-paced.[1][22]
  • Greatly admired by RIKU of THE RAMPAGE since their time as students of EXPG Tokyo together: "Kazuki from DOBERMAN INFINITY, who I was working with, was so amazing that I would repeatedly watch him, steal his skills, and then have him teach me so that we could perform together on stage."[1][23]
  • According to himself, he had mixed feelings when he was chosen as a new member of DOBERMAN INFINITY: "I didn't feel happy, to be honest, I felt more pressure like 'Is this going to be okay ......?'", ""All three (KUBO-C, GS, P-CHO) are very kind, but I was really nervous to walk in there by myself, with no career experience at all, and be a part of something that was really doing well by itself."[1][5]
  • Had many part-time jobs in his youth.[3]
    • His first part-time job was at a takoyaki shop when he was in high school.[3][6]
    • His most impressive part-time job was as a construction worker. "It was a job to assemble wooden houses, and I had to carry a big tree that was taller than the ceiling by myself. It was hard, hard work. It was such a physically demanding job that I often talked with my seniors at work about how we were the hardest workers in Japan right now (laughs). Thanks to that, I think I became physically and mentally exhausted."[3], "Physically, it was quite hard. We were assembling wooden houses and apartments, and even carrying the beams was very heavy, so I couldn't carry them at all at the beginning. My muscles ached all over and I wanted to quit after two days (laughs). But I felt bad for the acquaintance who introduced me to the job, so I kept at it and gradually got used to the work."[6] His co-workers and seniors at the job were supportive of him pursuing his dream of becoming a singer.[6]
    • All in all, he worked at a takoyaki shop, a restaurant, a bar, a tanning salon, a construction site and more.[3][6]
  • Described as the "backbone" of DOBERMAN INFINITY.[24]
    • According to P-CHO, he has a very strong presence in the group: "It's as if 50% of Dober is made up of the four of us, and the remaining 50% is KAZUKI alone."[24][1]
  • Left a strong impression on the three original members of DOBERMAN INFINITY during the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 4 ~Yume wo Motta Wakamono Tachi e~. His words "I would do anything to debut" in the final screening were one of the deciding factors to add him to the group.[25]
    • His love for R&B and his musical taste aligning with DOBERMAN's music were also important factors.[26]
  • According to himself, he is not very good at recording, and doesn't like to listen to his own voice. "So when I record, I turn off all the sound in my headphones. I just listen to the music and try to match the sound. I ask them to mute my own voice while recording."[5]
  • Sees a family structure within DOBERMAN INFINITY: "KUBO-C is the father, P-CHO is the mother, SWAY is the older brother, and GS is the advisor. Like a lifestyle advisor (laughs)."[7]
  • While playing baseball in his youth, his position was always pitcher.[2]
  • Dislikes the heat and prefers cold temperatures.[27]
