HiGH&LOW is a comprehensive entertainment project centered around the EXILE TRIBE that started in 2015. It consists of various media such as dramas, movies, music, live tours, games, manga, anime, books, official SNS accounts and temporary establishments, comprising an all-encompassing fictional universe. EXILE HIRO is the comprehensive producer of the whole franchise.[1]

About[]

The story of HiGH&LOW is about a town that was once dominated by a gang called Mugen. Mugen's grip on the town ended after the legendary Amamiya Brothers refused to submit to their will. It eventually splits into 5 districts dominated by the gangs of S.W.O.R.D: Sannoh Rengokai, White Rascals, Oya Kohkoh, RUDE BOYS and Daruma Ikka. The five gangs that comprise S.W.O.R.D. fight for their pride and glory, to protect their district.

Also known as "Sannoh District 2nd Generation Brawlers".
They were formed by local youths to protect the shopping district (Sannoh District) from lawless people.
Members Cobra, Yamato, and Noboru are childhood friends."

White Rascals[]

"The "W" in SWORD.
Also known as the "The White Devil of Temptation".
They are a group of white-clad scouts whose motto is to protect women who have been injured.
Based in the downtown club "HEAVEN", they host parties and introduce women to other clubs for a living, but they have no mercy on rough customers.
In the past, they were involved in a fierce turf war with the villainous scout group DOUBT."

Oya High School[]

"The "O" in SWORD.
Also known as "Jet-Black High School for the Evil", where the most violent people gather from all over the country.
It is divided into two courses: a part-time system and a full-time system.
The part-time system, headed by the juvenile delinquent leader Murayama, is said to be "first-class if you repeat a grade five times" and is a great source of human resources for the school.
However, Murayama's declaration stipulates a rule: "We will not involve the full-time students in the part-time school's disputes.""

RUDE BOYS[]

"The "R" in SWORD.
A team formed by orphans for self-defense in "Nameless Town", an extraterritorial town where people who are alone for the rest of their lives gather.
They know the devastated city well and instantly eliminate intruders with acrobatic attacks.
Also known as the "Ghosts of the Ruthless City".
Although they have no blood ties, their bond is strong.
They consider everyone who lives in the nameless town to be "family", and have a sense of duty to protect the elderly and children."

"The "D" in SWORD.
There was once an incident in which the Hyuga-kai (Hyuga party), an affiliate of the Kuryu Group, tried to destroy the strongest gang "MUGEN", but were instead destroyed.
Hyuga Norihisa, the youngest of the four Hyuga brothers, formed the team to avenge his brothers.
Their trademark is a red happi coat.
Also known as "Family of Revengeful Destroyers", they are a martial arts sect that rides their American cars to fights and rampages without second thought.
In addition to organizing festivals, they also run a gambling house.
They make money from cockfighting, playing hanafuda (Japanese playing cards), and gambling on fights."

MUGEN[]

"A legendary motorcycle gang which once ruled the area now known as SWORD.
The team was formed by a group of motorcycle enthusiasts centered around childhood friends Kohaku and Tatsuya.
Initially, the team consisted of seven members: Kohaku, Tatsuya, Ota, Konishi, Tsukumo, plus Cobra and Yamato, who currently lead Sannoh Rengokai.
Kohaku was the second president of MUGEN (ムゲン).
Later, the group grew in strength and at one point had as many as 100 members, but was suddenly disbanded after the death of its founder, Tatsuya."

"They are the most powerful brothers, and they were the only two who could stand up to the once overwhelming power of MUGEN.
They despise people who crowd around them, and move about in mysterious ways on their jet-black Harleys.
Both brothers are users of "Zero-Range Combat", an actual combat technique that allows them to defeat gun-toting enemies with their bare hands.
Above Masaki, the second son, and Hiroto, the third son, is the eldest son, Takeru, who surpasses them both in ability."

"A team of ladies from the Sannoh District, dressed in embroidered pink Tokkou Fuku (long jackets of biker gang members) and riding around on custom, modified motorcycles.
Like the Sannoh Rengokai, "ITOKAN" is their hangout.
They have known the Sannoh members since they were small children, and they sometimes fight with each other in a quarrelsome manner.
Their network is powerful and extensive, and they are quick to obtain information on fights and trouble that occur in the SWORD District."

MIGHTY WARRIORS[]

"A team firmly united by respect for music and fashion.
Although their origins are disparate, they have all lived through grand circumstances.
They are based in the huge club "FUNK JUNGLE" in the bay area, and their goal is to eventually build their own "utopia".
To raise funds for this, they also work as "mercenaries".
They value the bonds of friendship more than organization or position.
They are free warriors, unbound by anything."

"A group of villainous scouts founded by Hayashi Ranmaru, the "mad dog" who once terrorized the Rasen and Arai areas, together with Takano and Hirai.
They regard women as nothing more than "tools for making money" and have long been enemies with the White Rascals."

Trivia[]

  • Kubo Shigeaki, one of the main directors of the franchise, also directs music videos for LDH artists.[9]
  • Ouchi Takahito, the general action director of the franchise, had previously worked with director Kubo Shigeaki and EXILE TRIBE on the music video for the song "S.A.K.U.R.A." by Sandaime J SOUL BROTHERS in 2014.[10]
  • Each team (and central character) in the HiGH&LOW universe has a unique fighting style, which was chosen by the director and action director. The individual skills and abilities of the actors were also considered to develop the specific styles.[11]
  • The collaboration between HiGH&LOW, "CROWS" and "WORST" for the HiGH&LOW THE WORST spin-off came to be due to the fact that EXILE HIRO and Takahashi Hiroshi, manga artist and author of "CROWS" and "WORST", had been in contact with each other since Takahashi helped design the characters for the EXAMURAI Sengoku comic series in 2009. Kubo Shigeaki, the director of HiGH&LOW THE WORST, had also been a huge fan of Takahashi's works and the CROWS ZERO movie directed by Miike Takashi.[9]
  • According to director Kubo Shigeaki, HiGH&LOW is a unique film set that differs from ordinary movies because it is made from the ideas of many people; as the actors, cameraman, art staff, etc. all come up with the ideas, resulting in a combination of ideas for the final product.[12]
