EXILE THE SECOND (formerly THE SECOND from EXILE) is a Japanese dance & vocal boy group formed and managed by LDH JAPAN and signed to the record label rhythm zone. The group is the first derivative unit from EXILE.

The unit initially only included the members of Nidaime J Soul Brothers (except for NAOTO and NAOKI), but in 2016 an EXILE member, AKIRA, joined the line-up.

They made their major debut on November 7, 2012 with the single "THINK 'BOUT IT!".

Background[]

In January 2007, EXILE announced that it would hold an audition to recruit new members for the second generation of J Soul Brothers. Nesmith and Shokichi, finalists of the EXILE VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION, were the first members to join the new generation in August 2007. Performers KENCHI, KEIJI and TETSUYA were soon added. Three months later, performers NAOTO and NAOKI were added, and they gave their debut performances at COLOR's 2007 nationwide tour, COLOR LIVE TOUR 2007: BLUE. The second generation, called the Nidaime J Soul Brothers, released their debut single "WE!" in May 2008 under the indies label, Rhythm Republic. Nidaime J Soul Brothers announced their hiatus after the release of their first self-titled album J Soul Brothers in February 2009. A month later, the Nidaime members joined the lineup of EXILE. Members NAOTO and NAOKI stayed behind to re-join J Soul Brothers' third generation, the Sandaime J Soul Brothers.

2012: Debut[]

On July 1, during the last concert of EXILE TRIBE LIVE TOUR 2012 ~TOWER OF WISH~, the group was announced as an unit from EXILE, named THE SECOND from EXILE. The group activities started on November 7 of the same year with their debut single "THINK 'BOUT IT!".

2013-2015[]

On August 14, 2013, the group their second single "SURVIVORS feat. DJ MAKIDAI from EXILE / Pride".

On February 5, 2014, the group released their first album, THE Ⅱ AGE. The group also participated of EXILE TRIBE PERFECT YEAR LIVE TOUR TOWER OF WISH 2014 ~THE REVOLUTION~ tour in 2014.

On December 4, 2015, during the EXILE LIVE TOUR 2015 "AMAZING WORLD" concert in Kyocera Dome Osaka, Tachibana Kenchi was announced the group's leader.

2016[]

On May 20, the group changed its name to EXILE THE SECOND.

On June 6, the group announced their third single "YEAH!! YEAH!! YEAH!!", released on July 13.

On August 24, the group released their fourth single "Shut up!! Shut up!! Shut up!!".

On September 5, it was announced that EXILE's member AKIRA had officially joined the group, making EXILE THE SECOND a 6-member group. Prior to joining the group, he appeared on the music videos of their last two singles "YEAH!! YEAH!! YEAH!!" and "Shut up!! Shut up!! Shut up!!".

On September 21, they released their fifth single "WILD WILD WILD". This is the first single with AKIRA as member of the group and of the 6-member line-up.

On October 3, the song "Shut up!! Shut up!! Shut up!!" won the Best Group Video -Japan- award at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards Japan.

On October 29, the group started their first tour, EXILE THE SECOND LIVE TOUR 2016-2017 "WILD WILD WARRIORS".

2017[]

On March 1, the group released their second album BORN TO BE WILD.

On June 3, they performed at Viral Fest Asia 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand, as their first overseas performance.[1]

On June 28, the group released their 7th single "Summer Lover".

On September 27, the group released their 8th single "Route 66".

On October 18, the group started their second tour EXILE THE SECOND LIVE TOUR 2017-2018 "ROUTE 6・6", that went through until May 2018.

2018[]

On February 20, the group released their 9th single "Acacia".

On March 28, they released their third album "Highway Star".

2019[]

On October 4, the group released the digital singles "Top Down" and "Ain't Afraid To Die". Both songs were used as insert songs for the HiGH&LOW movie HiGH&LOW THE WORST.

2020[]

On January 1, they released their 10th single in a joint release with EXILE, titled "Shunkan Eternal".

On February 22, the group released their first best album EXILE THE SECOND THE BEST.

2022[]

On June 10, it was announced that member Kuroki Keiji would retire from the entertainment industry by the end of October 2022, subsequently leaving the group and LDH JAPAN.[2]

On October 21, it was announced that the members would hold a special broadcast and press conference at LDH kitchen THE TOKYO HANEDA on November 2 that would be simultaneously broadcasted on the platform CL to report the future activities of the group.[3]

On October 31, Kuroki Keiji officially graduated from the group.

On November 2, the special broadcast revealed that the third tour and first hall tour of the group titled EXILE THE SECOND LIVE TOUR 2023 ~Twilight Cinema~ would be held from February 10 to June 2, 2023 and that the their 11th single titled "Twilight Cinema" would be released on February 22, 2023.[4]

On December 25, the group made a guest appearance at the concert of Taiwanese band MAYDAY held in Taoyuan City, Taiwan.[5][6]

2023[]

On May 24, the group released the song "NEVER SAY GOODBYE". The song was used as the ending theme of the reality show Mysterious Hardware Store, in which member AKIRA appears.[7]

On October 21, it was announced that the members would hold a special broadcast on the platform CL to report the future activities of the group.[8]

On November 4, the special broadcast revealed that the fourth tour and third arena tour of the group titled EXILE THE SECOND LIVE TOUR 2024 "THE FAR EAST COWBOYZ" would be held from March 7 to May 12, 2024.[9]

2024[]

On March 1, the group released their first (digital) EP titled THE FAR EAST COWBOYZ E.P., followed by the release of their fourth studio album THE FAR EAST COWBOYZ on June 5.[10][11]

Trivia[]

  • In February 2017, it was recognized by the Nippon Kinenbi Kyoukai (Japan Anniversary Association) that February 22 is the EXILE THE SECOND DAY.[12]
  • The members plan and produce live tours of the group themselves. The vocalists put together the musical aspects, while the performers use that as a basis to think about the direction and dance.[13]
  • Their song "WILD WILD WILD" was performed as an evaluation song on Produce 101 Japan in 2019.
