Sato Atsushi (佐藤篤志), better known by his stage name ATSUSHI, is a Japanese singer and songwriter. He is a member of the groups EXILE and RED DIAMOND DOGS, a soloist as EXILE ATSUSHI and former member of group COLOR.

History[]

Pre-debut[]

Because of his strong passion for music, he decided to be a singer since his years in High School. During his years in Music College, he participated on an ASAYAN audition. This became his turning point as he was noticed by HIRO and invited to join J Soul Brothers.

2001-2011[]

In the summer of 2001, J Soul Brothers changed its name to EXILE and, on September 27, 2001, they made their debut by releasing "Your eyes only ~Aimai na Boku no Katachi~".

In 2004 he joined the group COLOR, however two years later, in 2006, he decided to leave. Although he left the group, he became a producer for the new line-up until July 2009, when COLOR changed their name to the current DEEP.

Besides his activities as EXILE' vocalist, he also collaborates with other artists like AI, ICONIQ and Kubota Toshinobu. On September 14, 2011, he made his solo debut as EXILE ATSUSHI with the song "Itsuka Kitto...". The song was included as the second A-side of a joint single released by EXILE and ATSUSHI, titled "Rising Sun / Itsuka Kitto...".

2016[]

On May 28, during the first concert of his solo tour EXILE ATSUSHI LIVE TOUR 2016 "IT'S SHOW TIME!!", in Kyocera Dome Osaka, he announced his new project RED DIAMOND DOGS.[1]

On August 31, he announced on EXILE's website that he would limit his Japanese activities and move his base of activities to America until 2018. He said that he desired to become a world-class vocalist, and for EXILE to become a world-class group. After consulting with the staff, HIRO, and the other EXILE members, he decided to move his base of operations to LDH's overseas in the US office until 2018. Due to this decision, EXILE would also have limited activities as a group until his return in 2018.

Message from EXILE ATSUSHI[2][3]
"To everyone who supports EXILE and EXILE ATSUSHI:

Thanks a lot for always supporting EXILE and EXILE ATSUSHI warmly. Today, I would like to make an announcement to everyone about my activities from now on. Please read this till the end.

Carrying my dream as a vocalist, I’ve entered the 15th anniversary of EXILE since the group’s debut.

In these 15 years, really a lot has happened. Up till now, there have been countless wonderful songs and encounters. Having been able to sing with all my heart, I am filled with emotions of thanks, deep virtues, miracles and blessings.

Of course, all these, since our debut, have happened thanks to the continuous support from many fans who stand by me all the time.

I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Thank you very much.

Ever since I started to become a vocalist, my passion for singing has never faded. I have always been thinking how I could evolve as a vocalist. I wondered, for my fans who have been looking forward to my singing, how my singing would be of use to them even just for a little bit.

Up till now, I have been working hard as the vocalist of EXILE, or as an individual lyricist, song composer or producer of various songs.

What’s more, I’ve collaborated with esteemed artists, pursued solo activities and organized my solo dome tour this year. All these opportunities have really allowed me to gain important experiences.

The original members, HIRO, MATSU, ÜSA and MAKIDAI, who founded EXILE together with me 15 years ago, have all retired from front-stage performance. As the only remaining original member, my thought of improving myself to contribute more to EXILE and to bring the group to achieve higher goals has grown more intense.

While EXILE is about to enter its 15th anniversary, what the group, and myself, should do to go a stage further… this is what I have been pondering in these few years.

EXILE nowadays consists of members who are concurrently working for other groups as well. We have somehow become an all-star corps. As the vocalist of such a group, every day, I feel like I should bring the group to a higher level.

The music of EXILE originated from R&B and dance music in America. For all fans in Japan, we have been trying to create a form of music that is easier to listen to. Furthermore, we have incorporated the unique Japanese elements of “the soul” and “the heart” to create a new genre of music. This has been the challenge for us.

During my activities, I have had the opportunities to work with great musicians from around the world. As a vocalist, I have decided to pursue further studies about music.

Up till now, I have been delivering my best to you all in Japan. I now seek to ascend to the next stage, by putting myself in adversity and going back to basics, to learn English and to equip myself with performing and singing skills of world-class level so as to become a world-class vocalist. I believe this is essential for making EXILE a world-class artist-group.

Therefore, I discussed with HIRO, EXILE members and staff and decided to temporarily migrate the base of my own activities overseas.

But then I think some of you may feel uneasy about my focusing on overseas activities. To help get rid of the distance of me being abroad, we would update all fans any time with my latest activities through the fan club, mobile, Shuukan EXILE, EXILE Magazine and other media like Facebook.

However, to migrate the base of my activities overseas would mean a limit to my physical presence in Japan for a while. This does not only apply to my activities as EXILE ATSUSHI, but also EXILE activities. Therefore, we would not be able to give performances as EXILE for a while. We are very sorry to all the fans who have been supporting us all the time.

The migration of the base of activities is only temporary. Hereby, I promise to show you all the evolved EXILE ATSUSHI, and the performance of the evolved EXILE!

And that would be in the year 2018.

In the EXILE live tour “AMAZING WORLD” in 2015, I felt that the live entertainment of EXILE had reached its peak. To surpass the peak and create even greater EXILE entertainment, we have been preparing for this temporary shifting of activity base abroad.

All we want is to continue to create EXILE entertainment that everyone would enjoy and find amazing.

Even though this might be a selfish hope, I wish you could understand this decision and look forward to the evolved EXILE and EXILE ATSUSHI. I would be glad that if you could wait a little while until the year 2018.

Finally, there is something I have felt anew recently.

That is the possibility of how infinitely entertainment could go in the realm of the world.

This decision, for myself, is a huge one. But why could I make such a decision? That is because I have worked with several foreign artists and from our collaboration, I have felt “possibility”.

Spreading this “possibility” and further developing it may perhaps connect countries to one another.

For me, if I could speak the languages of different countries, I might understand their people better…

I have always felt such a limitless “potential” in this.

And so, in order not to end the possibility of this “if...”, I have made up my mind.

A miracle has happened.

And right in front of my eyes, it starts to occur.

To me, in the world I see and the way I see things, I can dream endlessly and chase whichever dreams wherever I am.

This is the best thing about chasing “dreams”. This is what I have finally realized.

But of course, the prerequisite is the presence of every one of you who have been supporting me.

That’s why, from now on, without being satisfied with the status quo, instead of being the “ATSUSHI who doesn’t change”, I wholeheartedly want to become the “new, constantly growing ATSUSHI”.

Always and ever, for all who have been there giving us their warmest support, I decide to work hard with all my efforts.

I hereby swear to become a singer who nourishes everyone’s heart. And I sincerely hope for your understanding.

To everyone, thank you very much, always.

EXILE ATSUSHI".

2018[]

On April 11, ATSUSHI made his return as a soloist with the single "Just The Way You Are", a cover of the song of same title by Bruno Mars.

2020[]

On November 2, ATSUSHI announced that he would be retiring from his vocalist position on EXILE to focus on his solo activities but would remain as member of the group. He made his last appearance on EXILE activities with the single "SUNSHINE", which was released on December 16.[4][5][6][7]

Announcement from LDH JAPAN[8]
To fans who always support EXILE

Thank you for your constant warm support to EXILE. We would like to share a piece of news here. EXILE ATSUSHI will end his activities in EXILE on November 2 and focus on his solo activities as EXILE ATSUSHI.

EXILE ATSUSHI made his debut in EXILE with the single "Your eyes only ~Aimai na Boku no Katachi~" on September 27, 2001. In EXILE, he has sung about 200 songs, and has been involved with 11 albums and 15 live tours. He has been leading EXILE's music and delivering EXILE's singing voice.

With his 40th birthday celebrated this year as an opportunity, EXILE ATSUSHI's desire to challenge himself further as a solo artist in the limited time of his life grew stronger. To carry out activities abroad, he signed an album-production contract with the music production team "1500 or Nothin'" that produces songs for Bruno Mars and other artists. But due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic across the world, he is not able to launch activities at present. So he has decided to devote the rest of his life to his solo activities.

All the EXILE members have accepted EXILE ATSUSHI's decision. Both the EXILE members and LDH will continue to support EXILE ATSUSHI's challenge to his new dream in the future with all the gratitude to him.

The news can make fans who always supported him feel a little lonely, but we believe the singing voice of EXILE ATSUSHI as a member of EXILE over the past years will remain in the hearts of fans and through many works.

EXILE HIRO retired from the dance & vocal group EXILE in 2013, Toshio Matsumoto, EXILE MAKIDAI and EXILE ÜSA retired in sequence in 2015. But all of them are still carrying out activities as EXILE. EXILE ATSUSHI will continue carrying EXILE's spirit as a solo artist and a member of EXILE and showing what EXILE is like as EXILE ATSUSHI.

EXILE also changed its form and evolved over the years. And now, the 14 members with EXILE AKIRA and EXILE TAKAHIRO leading the group will start a new chapter of EXILE. The 14 members are determined to inherit EXILE and present a new EXILE which only can be presented by them. In order to realize this, the members will band together and unite their hearts, so please look forward to EXILE's performances in the future.

The dance & vocal group EXILE will continue to carry out activities as a 14-member group, but EXILE ATSUSHI and other 18 members of EXILE will bear EXILE PRIDE in mind and walk together the ultimate path of EXILE.

For sure, one day, you will see EXILE ATSUSHI's collaborations with the new EXILE and performances presented by all the EXILE members. Please continue to give them warm support while looking forward to EXILE ATSUSHI's new challenges and activities of the new 14-member EXILE.

EXILE ATSUSHI will continue carrying out activities as a member of EXILE and an artist of LDH JAPAN. "SUNSHINE", the last single with EXILE ATSUSHI's participation, will be digitally released at 00:00 on November 3. The CD will be out on December 16.

Please continue to support EXILE ATSUSHI and EXILE as always.

LDH JAPAN

Announcement from EXILE ATSUSHI[9]
To fans who always support EXILE

Thank you for your constant warm support to EXILE. I would like to make an important announcement today, so please have a read.

I joined J Soul Brothers in 2001 when I was 21 years old. It also has been almost 20 years since my debut in EXILE on September 27, 2001. This year I celebrated my 40th birthday, and EXILE will also celebrate its 20th anniversary next year.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world is now in an unprecedented state, so I had a chance to think about my life. At the same time, it made me realize that one's life is limited, and I thought hard about how I should live my life as an artist and as a person after turning 40.

After seriously considering my future life, I decided that in the milestone 2020 year, when I turned 40, I would go back to my origins as a singer and start anew. I decided to say goodbye to the activities of EXILE who cultivated me and retire from the group to focus on my solo activities.

As for why I made this decision and how I felt about this will be written in my book "Sign" to be released on November 12, so I will not talk about all of these here.

With me leaving the group, the form of EXILE will change. Changing the form and keeping on evolving. This is the way of EXILE's existence decided by us and also EXILE's destiny.

The future performances of the dance & vocal group EXILE will be presented by the 14 members who will continue to show "EXILE". Even now, HIRO, MATSU, ÜSA and MAKIDAI still belong to EXILE and each member of the 19-member EXILE presents EXILE and EXILE's vision in different ways at different places under the name of EXILE. I think it is a way of existence unique to "EXILE" which no other artist group ever had.

Since debuting at 21 years old, EXILE was my everything. I have spent every New Year's Eve and celebrated every New Year together with EXILE. The following springs, summers, autumns and winters were also spent with EXILE.

Looking back at the events of the past 20 years, I sung about 200 songs, released 11 original albums and participated in 15 live tours as a group member. I also sung 115 solo songs and held 3 solo live tours. It felt like I have been running at full speed following a reckless schedule.

Thanks to fans who always support me, I was able to cope with all of this. I would like to express my gratitude from the bottom of my heart.

I am really grateful for that.

In the future, I plan to have discussions with HIRO and the other members and help to write the lyrics, compose and direct songs for EXILE when necessary. I would like to go on living as a member of EXILE with pride.

I feel that for me, a singer at the age of 40, it is the last chance of challenging myself to take my solo career to the next level. How many more live tours can I hold? How many more songs can I produce? Even if I stay healthy at the age of 80, I can only hold 20 live tours provided that I hold a live tour each year before I turn 60. If that so, I want to hold 20 live tours with no regrets in my future life and career as a singer.

Moreover, to advance my overseas activities, I had signed an album-production contract with the music production team "1500 or Nothin'" that produces songs for Bruno Mars and other artists. I was preparing to hold activities abroad, but everything came to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic across the world. However, I am restarting them little by little. I will officially carry out overseas activities in the future as well as learn and absorb all sorts of things for my development. I feel that now is the best time for me to spread my wings.

By taking on this challenge at the age of 40, I want to move a step further in my own life through the dreams I have had for many years, the way of living as a person and my solo activities. I am sure you will gradually understand my thoughts when you see my future solo music activities and charity events.

The experience and knowledge I gained in the past 20 years not only as an artist but also as a person helped me to begin understanding society a little and learn about the system of the world that I live in. That is why I think this is the actual start of my life.

Songs are like my prayers. I will continue singing in hope that my songs will help somebody. I will be happy if you keep on supporting EXILE and EXILE ATSUSHI in the future.

On November 12, he released his second book Sign.

2022[]

On April 26, it was announced that ATSUSHI would perform with EXILE at the EXILE LIVE TOUR 2022 "POWER OF WISH" as a special appearance, being his first activity with the group after his retirement from EXILE's activities.

On April 30, he released his fifth studio album and second best album in a joint release, titled ONE.

On December 21, at the final concert of the EXILE LIVE TOUR 2022 "POWER OF WISH" ~Christmas Special~, ATSUSHI announced that he would be returning to his position as vocalist of EXILE, cancelling his previously announced retirement.[10]

On December 22, he released his twelfth digital single "You Own My Heart".[11]

2023[]

From June 13 to September 27, ATSUSHI was scheduled to hold his 5th solo live tour EXILE ATSUSHI LIVE TOUR 2023 "Heart to Heart" Season 2, a sequel to the EXILE ATSUSHI LIVE TOUR 2021 "Heart to Heart" held in 13 cities in 2021.[12] However, due to health problems, the tour was at first cancelled before being moved to 2025.[13][14][15]

On June 14, he released the digital single "Photograph", collaborating with Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra's Horn Section. It will be featured as the theme song for "Netto Koshien" on TV Asahi.[16]

On December 21, he released the EP MBAT, collaborating with artist MABU. It was released in a limited format.[17]

From April 12 to July 30, ATSUSHI is scheduled to hold his previously cancelled 5th solo live tour now renamed EXILE ATSUSHI LIVE TOUR 2025 "Heart to Heart" Season 2, with a 4-day opening concert at Saitama Super Arena and Osaka-jō Hall titled EXILE ATSUSHI LIVE TOUR 2025 "Heart to Heart" ~Fukkatsu-sai~.[15]

Personal Life[]

Health

On August 5, 2022, it was announced that ATSUSHI had been diagnosed with COVID-19 after experiencing symptoms and would carefully be following the instructions of the public health center and experts for a healthy recovery. As a result, the EXILE LIVE TOUR 2022 "POWER OF WISH" performances to be held on August 11, 13 and 14 at Saitama Belluna Dome would be postponed or cancelled.[18][19][20]

On April 23, 2023, it was announced that ATSUSHI would be taking a hiatus due to health problems. He had felt unwell after a dinner with business associates in mid-March. After assessing the situation and undergoing a detailed examination, it was determined that the illness was caused by a suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Since he was still experiencing subjective symptoms, he would currently be undergoing medical treatment to improve his condition under the guidance of his doctor. He would slowly be recovering, but at that point he would not be able to perform live for long periods of time and would need to concentrate on his medical treatment for a while longer. For this reason, the first concerts of his EXILE ATSUSHI LIVE TOUR 2023 "Heart to Heart" Season 2 in Yamanashi , Shiga, Mie, Miyagi and Hokkaido would be postponed or canceled. Additionally, his performance at the "#HIROSHIMA Mirai Baton" event to be held at Edion Stadium Hiroshima on May 4 would be be cancelled.[21][22][23][24][25][26]

On June 2, 2023, it was announced that all performances of the EXILE ATSUSHI LIVE TOUR 2023 "Heart to Heart" Season 2 had to be cancelled as ATSUSHI was not yet able to perform for a long time despite gradually recovering from his poor health, and all purchased tickets would be refunded.[27][13][14]

On September 27, 2023, ATSUSHI revealed in a live-stream on his Instagram that in the first three months, the symptoms of the carbon monoxide poisoning, such as dizziness, nausea, and headaches every day, had triggered Ménière's disease. In August, he then began experiencing depression-like symptoms, as he had "no energy". After that, he underwent multiple examinations at a clinic and was found to have Helicobacter pylori and Lyme disease, for which he also had yet to recover.[28]

On September 27, 2024, ATSUSHI revealed on an Instagram post that thanks to his Lyme disease now being in remission, he would be able to resume his activities both as a soloist and as a member of EXILE in 2025, starting with his previously cancelled tour.[29]
